Ducks are easy to identify by their colorful and shimmering plumage. After nesting, however, they lose their colorful feathers and adopt what is called "eclipse plumage". During this period, they are only distinguished from ducks by their yellow beak.
Fun fact: Unlike ducks, wigeons do not have a brown spot on their beaks.
